About the Adverts

31/12/09 : At Laem Pak Bia a male White-faced Plover, 3 Pallas's Gulls and a Chinese Egret were seen at the sand spit on 27th December. Also at Laem Pak Bia were at least 10 Nordmann's Greenshank.

The male Japanese Thrush was present on 25th December after being seen for around 1 week at Khao Yai.

30/12/09 : On 29th a male Grey-winged Blackbird, a pair of Chestnut Thrushes, 2 Black-eared Shrike-babblers, 2 Eyebrowed Thrushes, 10 Long-tailed Sibias, 1 male Rufous-gorgetted Flycatcher, 1 Scarlet-faced Liocichla, 1 male & 4 female Himalayan Bluetails and 1 male Fire-tailed Sunbird were seen at Doi Lang. On 28th a party of 8 Black-throated Tits were seen at Doi Lang.

A Giant Nuthatch was found at Km 38 (used to be Km 31 but kilometre posts renumbered), Doi Ang Kang on 28th December. 30 Black-headed Greenfinches were seen at the Chinese Cemetery, Doi Ang Kang on 27th December along with 1 male Slaty-blue Flycatcher. A Chestnut-headed Tesia was seen at Km 21 on the same date as was a female Rufous-gorgetted Flycatcher and 2 Chestnut Buntings. Also on 27th 1 male Black-breasted Thrush, 1 Dark-sided Thrush and 1 male Grey-winged Blackbird were present behind the restaurant at the King's Project, Doi Ang Kang. At Ban Luang a Eurasian Sparrowhawk was seen.

A number of Thai photographers obtained pictures of 3 Himalayan Griffons and several Cutias at Doi Lang on 28th December.

24/12/09 : Interesting reports from Chiang Saen include 3 Long-billed Plovers on the Mekong on 21st, a reported Great Snipe was flushed from a pool on 20th December, Baer's Pochard, Mallard and Common Shelduck seen throughout the month on the lake and 6 Ruddy Shelduck on the Mekong on 18th December. - Mick Davies & Dowroong Danlamajak, Yonok Wetlands Project.

20/12/09 : On 20th December the duck flock at Chiang Saen lake contained 2 Baer's Pochard, 20+ Ferruginous Pochard, 1 female Baikal Teal, 2 Mallard, 2 Gadwall, 95 Common Teal, 12 Northern Pintail, 1 Common Shelduck, 1 Eurasian Wigeon, 2 Tufted Duck and more than 200 Spot-billed Ducks, although numbers of Garganey were low. On the Mekong at Chiang Saen many waders were present including 17 River Lapwings, 2 Long-billed Plovers and 1 Common Ringed Plover. More than 10 Citrine Wagtails and 50+ Plain Martins were also seen. - Nick Upton.

19/12/09 : 1 White-bellied Woodpecker & 3 Black-headed Woodpeckers were seen at Km 13, Doi Inthanon on 18th December. On 17th December a male Fire-capped Tit was observed along the jeep track at Km 37.5, Doi Inthanon, a flock of Black-throated Parrotbills were found at Km 34.5 and a male Blossom-headed Parakeet was seen near Inthanon Highland Resort.

2 Giant Nuthatches were seen at Km 31 (now renumbered as Km 38), Doi Ang Kang on 16th December and a flock of 8 Long-tailed Broadbills were present along the Mae Per forest trail. On 15th a male and female Black-breasted Thrush were foraging behind the Mae Per kitchen and a male Black-breasted Thrush was seen behind the kitchen of the restaurant in the King's Project, Doi Ang Kang. 2 Black-headed Greenfinches were seen at the Chinese Cemetery, Doi Ang Kang on the 15th with a flock of around 60 on the 14th. Also at the Chinese cemetery a Little Bunting was seen on 15th and a Spot-breasted Parrotbill on the 16th. On the 15th December a male and female Blue-fronted Redstart were found along the ridge trail at Doi Ang Kang and 1 male Mrs Hume's Pheasant was in the company of 4 females at Km 34 (now renumbered as Km 40). On the 14th a Chestnut-headed Tesia was seen along the Km 21 trail at the same location.

A male and female Jerdon's Bushchat were seen along the river near the Orange farm, close to Thatorn on 14th December.

A female Spot-winged Grosbeak and 2 juveniles were seen feeding near the large concrete bridge at Doi Lang on 14th December. On the same date a male Fire-tailed Sunbird was seen on the ridge, Doi Lang. On the road up Doi Lang on 14th a fall of migrants produced 1 Eurasian Woodcock, a male Daurian Redstart, several Eyebrowed Thrushes and a Crested Bunting. On 13th December 1 Scarlet-faced Liocichla was present at a feeding station at the second checkpoint, Doi Lang as were several Himalayan Bluetails and a female Rufous-gorgetted Flycatcher. A White-gorgetted Flycatcher was seen along the ridge, Doi Lang as were 2 Spot-breasted Parrotbills, 1 Oriental Hobby, 1 Eyebrowed Thrush and 1 Chestnut Thrush. On the 12th a Chestnut Thrush, a flock of Speckled Woodpigeons, 1 juvenile Daurian Redstart and a flock of Northern House Martins were seen at Doi Lang.

On the morning of 12th December, burnt rice paddies near Yonok Wetlands, Chiangs Saen produced a Rosy Pipit, 6 Chestnut-eared Buntings, 1 Bluethroat and a Citrine Wagtail. On the 11th the Harrier roost at Yonok contained around 60 birds, the majority of which were male Pied Harriers but 1 male Western Marsh Harrier was seen and 1 probable female Western Marsh Harrier. Several hundred Small Pratincoles were seen feeding at dusk in the same area. The duck flock at Chiang Saen lake contained 1 Common Shelduck, 2 Mallard, 2 Gadwall, 4 Northern Shovelers, 2 Baer's Pochard, 4 Northern Pintails, 1 Eurasian Wigeon, 20+ Ferruginous Pochards and, 3 Tufted Duck on 11th December. Also seen at Chiang Saen lake on 11th were 2 Siberian Rubythroats, 1 subadult Common Crane, 1 Eurasian Wryneck, 2 Chestnut-tailed Starlings, 8 Great Cormorants, 1 River Lapwing and 1 Grey-headed Lapwing. On the Mekong on 11th a single Long-billed Plover was seen. 13 River Lapwings were on the Mekong, Chiang Saen on 10th December as were 40-50 Plain Martins. At Yonok 4 Small Pratincoles were seen along with 3 Citrine Wagtails on exposed mud. A Burmese Shrike was also seen and the harrier roost contained around 70 birds, most of which were male Pied Harriers.

1 Ferruginous Partridge was seen at Km 16, Kaeng Krachan on 9th December. 1 Yellow-vented Warbler was observed at Km 25, Kaeng Krachan on 8th December and a female Eyebrowed Thrush was seen feeding on fallen fruit at Km 8. Also on 8th December at Kaeng Krachan 2 Great Slaty Woodpeckers were seen at Km 17 and a pair of Kalij Pheasants at Km 20.

On 6th December 5 Black-headed Ibises were seen near Wat Khao Takrao, Petchaburi along with 21 Painted Storks. 1 juvenile Pied Harrier, 2 female and 1 male Eastern Marsh Harriers were seen at Tung Bang Jak on 6th. Also on 6th December 1 Spoon-billed Sandpiper, 1 Eastern Curlew and 1 adult Black-tailed Gull were seen at Pak Thale with 2 Spoon-billed Sandpipers along with the gull and curlew on 5th. The escaped Greater Flamingo and 12 Red Knot were also seen at Pak Thale on 5th. 10 Eurasian Wigeon were seen at Laem Pak Bia on 6th. On 5th December an adult and 2 subadult Black-tailed Gulls were seen at the sand spit, Laem Pak Bia and 2 subadult Heuglin's Gulls at Pak Thale. 45 Nordmann's Greenshank were counted at Laem Pak Bia on 5th December. A Chinese Egret was present at the sand spit, Laem Pak Bia on 5th & 6th.

The above observations from Pak Thale, Laem Pak Bia, Kaeng Krachan, Chiang Saen, Doi Lang, Thatorn, Doi Ang Kang and Doi Inthanon were made by Nick Upton and Peter Rozemeyer.

On 3rd December 1 Grey-tailed Tattler, 1 Asian Dowitcher, 1 Spoon-billed Sandpiper and 1 Pallas's Gull were seen at Pak Thale. At Laem Pak Bia a Chinese Egret and a White-faced Plover were on the sand spit. - Nick Upton.
