I
get a lot of requests from people who are going to popular tourist
destinations within Thailand asking me if there are any good birding
locations nearby or what species they are likely to see around their
resort.
Ko Pha Ngan
is a frequently visited island off the east coast of Thailand, but
one which is not usually visited for the purpose of birdwatching.
However, I received a query about it from Ann Follows in December
2006 and having never visited the island I was only able to speculate
upon which species she might encounter. The only record from the
area I was able to locate was this one from Worldtwitch:
"30–40
Bridled Terns were reported on each of two rocky islets between
Ko Phang-ngan and Ko Tao, Hin Bai (Surat Thani)and Hin Lak Ngarm
(Chumphon) on 22 June."
Having returned
from her trip, Ann has very kindly supplied me with a list of birds
seen in the region around Chaloklum village, in the north of the
island. I hope it might prove useful to others heading to Ko Pha
Ngan. |
